When a baby has a bowel movement, an alert is sent to a smartphone. Parents can also check the temperature and humidity inside the diaper in real time through the app. These are the key features of the “Smart Diaper Alarm,” a diaper management sensor developed by Monit, a startup specializing in infant and toddler care.

Monit was founded in 2015 after participating in an internal contest at Samsung Electronics. The founding team had six members, all first-time fathers with a strong interest in baby products. Monit CEO Dohyung Park entered the contest with the idea of “a sensor that monitors the inside of a diaper in real time” and won an excellence award. The following year, in 2016, Monit was selected for Samsung Electronics’ in-house venture program, C-LAB, and began full-scale product development. Research and development took about one year.

In 2017, Monit spun off from C-LAB and officially launched the Smart Diaper Alarm. The product works by attaching a dedicated sensor to a diaper and installing an app on a smartphone, allowing parents to check temperature, humidity, and the baby’s movements. This lets parents know in detail whether their child has urinated or had a bowel movement, as well as the condition inside the diaper.

The market response exceeded expectations. The product gained word of mouth among bloggers and other social media users as a way to help prevent skin irritation and atopic dermatitis in babies caused by diapers not being changed on time. In August of last year, Monit received 500 million won in investment through OpenTrade, a crowdfunding site dedicated to startups.

The launch of a joint product with Yuhan-Kimberly became a major turning point for Monit. The “Huggies X Monit Smart Baby Monitor,” released in October of last year, generated 1.2 billion won in sales within nine months of launch. The product combines Monit’s diaper management technology with Huggies’ Internet of Things (IoT) technology. In addition to diaper monitoring, it can monitor air quality and control a nursing light.

Monit has also developed a sensor that attaches to baby carriers and helps balance a child’s center of gravity. By using this sensor, baby carriers can support a greater weight.
